Big thanks to David Mannl for pointing this out just now.

I've just signed up for the new ITV Mobizines service (see flash demo here). When you text "MOBILE" to 63330, you receive a link to download the client (if your phone is up to it, mine is an old 7610 and it worked no problems). The client will install the standalone Flash Lite player along with the main application and a skinned media player (just the 2 icons on the main menu, the media player is invoked by the client). When the client is installed via Symbian installer you should see the unmistakeable vector UI and bitmap fonts of Flash Lite 1.1 being used to offer a TV Guide, weather, news and entertainment with the option to download more "Mobizines", or mobile magazines - similar to the channels concept pushed elsewhere. Prime candidate for a FlashCast server hey :).

More information on the Mobizines service that ITV have used can be found at: http://www.refreshmobile.com/mobizines.htm

This sounds great! But I went through the process and just got a link to the ITV WAP site... When I visit it on my 6630 there is a menu with the these options [The X Factor, Entertainment News, Soaps and Dramas, TV Guide, News, Sport, Weather, Fun and Games, Help, Wap Terms, Terms of Use]. I can't see which option I need to choose to download the client :(
Any idea where I'm going wrong?

I think this may be detecting your handset as incompatible, when I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have any problems running the client.

It sent me a link to download the client directly (appears as a globe in the inbox), and also a message with that same URL inside it.

I'm not sure if it is possible to manually download the client, perhaps contacting them they might be able to give you the URL (mine appears to have a unique ID appended).

Wierd - I got a text straight back with a link to http://wap.itv.com/?mx=foo (except the foo is some kind of unique ID). That's the link that gave me the menu I described above... I'll contact the customer service as maybe it is something about my provider (Three) and handset (Nokia 6630) showing up somehow as incompatible...

I'll let you know how I go...

Yeah I got the same sort of link, although it took me to a page where I could download the app.

Thanks, Rich

Just spoken to customer service a couple of times... First time they mentioned the number should be 63330. So I texted that number but got a very similar text back which just took me to the normal ITV WAP homepage...
Second time I spoke to them it took them a while to figure out what "Mobizines" was and then they had to ring me back. Unfortunately it was with bad news :'(
Mobizines isn't available on the "three" network currently. They say that they are talking to three at the moment and hope to have it available in a couple of weeks time...

Hi Richard,

I just watched that demo, really awesome idea running on flash UI. Do you know anything about Brew providing flash lite content?

Hey Luciano,

Yeah it's pretty darn good. I'm sorry I don't know anything about BREW other than the MM press release.

Hi Guys,

curently Three in the UK is still a walled garden. But the good news is that they are opening it up more and more. So we hopefully can support Mobizines on Three as well pretty soon.
The shortcode number mentioned in the article is wrong. It should be 63330.

Best regards

Ah thankyou David, I text the wrong number originally, and 8 instead of a 0 at the end. Strangely I still got through to ITV, only I received the WAP link as did Kevin. But as you say the correct number should be 63330. :)

Hi,

How does the player download work? I thought you had to give Macromedia your phone IEMI number to get the player?

Is this no longer the case....?

mobizines grrr!! buggered my 6630!! I did have quite a lot on the phone at the time but after downloading it the phone just locked up with no memory left, had the phone wiped tried again, but it corrupted again and buggered the flash player too! well maybe its all just coincidence it did look good for a while tho!

I've just tried to access the service using my MDA Pro. Unfortunatly I was told that my phone is incompatible. How come the SDA (and other Microsoft smartphones) is compatible but the more sophisticated Pocket PC edition handset are not?

Hi Mark,

I think this is a legacy issue, but I've had reports of lots of Flash Lite content working just fine on PocketPCs in the Flash 6 player (as it should, apart from soft-keys and a few other bits). No doubt the newer PocketPCs will be supported soon.

Hi Mark,

It looks like the MDA pro is not supported at the moment. A list of all supported devices can be found here:
