Christian Halbach has announced the source for his mobile Flash Lite 1.1 to Native Device Storage app (Flash2File) has been released in his latest blog post. This is really good news and I’ll be interested to see if any (Symbian) C++ coders out there take on the task and extend the functionality in the vein of Screenweaver for example.
This might also be a project for OSFlash.org, although I’m going to check… But a big thankyou to Christian for his hard work.
For those interested, the only ways to achieve local storage in Flash Lite 1.1 is to set up a server either written in native C++ or J2ME that listens out for loadVariables() on a specific port. Or an application that just reads in the args (as with this app). I expect with a few more hooks these apps could be extended to provide a whole host of functions. The only problem is distribution, as the server must be running along side your Flash application, although this can be achieved easily by creating a Symbian installer file (SIS) which allows the installation of native and J2ME apps in a simple no hassle process and provides an icon to launch it.
